Chana Benjamin is the founder, president, and director of the not-for-profit art gallery New Century Artists, Inc., formerly located at 530 West 25 Street, Suite 406, Chelsea, New York up until August 2015. Since 1996, she has arranged all the exhibitions held at the gallery and is responsible for curating four to six gallery member shows per year.
The mission of New Century Artists is to encourage, support and exhibit the work of under-represented artists from minority communities such as gay and lesbian, people of color, various ethnic groups, the differently abled, women, and artists of all ages including seniors and children.
From 1987 to 1995, Ms. Benjamin was the owner and director of The Multi Media Arts Galley, located in SoHo, where she curated more than 70 exhibitions featuring 500 contemporary artists from 25 countries.
Since 1992, she has been an Assistant Professor at Parsons The New School for Design, for two courses entitled Presenting Your Art Work to Galleries and Gallery Management. In 2009, she began teaching Managing and Handling Difficult Appraisal Asssignments and Curating Art at Pratt Institute.
For the past 21 years she has worked as a fine art appraiser for O’Toole-Ewald Art Associates, Inc. She is involved in all phases of appraisal report writing, researching and photographing for insurance/estate/fair market value and damage/loss purposes. She has extensive international and national dealer contact re appraisals and special reports. O’Toole-Ewald clients include St. Paul Traveler’s Insurance, Fireman’s Fund, Chubb Insurance, Con Edison, Berry-Hill Galleries, Dorsky Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery, Forum Gallery, Altria Group Inc., Pfizer Inc., Simon & Schuster, Young & Rubicam, Atlantic Mutual, Johnson & Higgins, Clifford Chance Rogers & Wells, Port Authority of NY & NJ, Polaroid, Roy Lichtenstein Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation.
From 1995 to 2003, she taught photography to children, grades 2 to 5, in an after school program at P.S. 87. From 1998 to 2001, she taught a similar after school program at P.S. 75. In 1999 and 2000, Ms. Benjamin taught photography to adults at the Creative Center for Women with Cancer.
She has been photographing for the past 40 years and has shown her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout New York City including The National Arts Club, Chase Bank, Xerox Corporation, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, Parsons School of Design, West Side Arts Coalition, New Century Artists, and The Multi Media Arts Gallery.
Ms. Benjamin has traveled worldwide, photographing extensively, and is the director and producer of several videotapes and films. She holds a BA from New York University in film and video production and an MA from New York Institute of Technology in Communication Arts. In 1996, she completed a two-year certificate program in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts at New York University.
She studied black and white photography at the Women’s Interart Center and color photography at the International Center of Photography. From 1979 to 1980 she was an assistant teacher of black and white intermediate photography courses at the International Center of Photography.
